“About Our Self Catering Holiday Cottage ”

The Barn was purchased in the summer of 2000 as a project abandoned by the previous owner. It had originally been part of the pub next door and had been marketed by the brewery. We believe it dates back to around 1670 although its difficult to be sure. We have designed the project and completed most of the work ourselves under architect supervision. Whilst accepting that true self sufficiency is not really viable we wish to get as near to that aim as possible. This is not for economic reasons but for quality of food. Whilst pursuing planning permission in 2000 we also planted fruit trees and established a soft fruit garden and vegetable plots. Production is now coming on stream and last year we were self sufficient in fruit and vegetables for around nine months. This will increase this year with the addition of a greenhouse we expect to be almost self sufficient in fruit and veg. We established an apiary last year and if the bees have survived the winter we hope to have honey available later this year. We have hens who lay fresh eggs most days and are currently investigating the possibility of a couple of rare breed pigs. We are happy that other people may share our home and the beautiful part of the country in which we are fortunate enough to live
